Three Spreadsheet Answers Need One Shared Audit Trail
Three models need the same spreadsheet evidence
A spreadsheet can look orderly and still contain several competing versions of the truth. Dates may switch formats halfway down a column. Customer names may differ by one space. A blank amount might mean zero, unknown, or not yet invoiced. Handing that workbook to three AI models can reveal useful differences, but only if each receives the same evidence and instructions.
This is a practical exercise, not a claim that one model has won a benchmark. The goal is to learn whether each model notices uncertainty, preserves important details, and produces changes a person can check. A polished answer is not necessarily a clean spreadsheet.
The original workbook must remain untouched throughout
Start with a copy and write a short description of the spreadsheet's purpose. Explain what one row represents, which columns matter, and what a correct result should support. A sales report and a contact list can contain similar fields but require different decisions.
Remove information you do not need to share, especially personal or confidential data. Check your organization's rules before uploading anything. Also establish what the chosen interface can actually read: access to an AI model does not automatically include tools for opening and editing workbook files.
A text export can help with simple tables, but it may omit formulas, formatting, hidden sheets, and other workbook features. If those features matter, include a separate inventory or use a tool that can inspect them. Keep stable row identifiers so every proposed change can be traced back.
One shared brief makes three answers comparable
Give all three models the same task: inspect first, propose repairs second, and flag decisions requiring human approval. Ask them to distinguish observed problems from guesses. Request the same output structure, including a problem list, proposed changes, unresolved questions, and validation checks.
Make the boundaries concrete. Standardizing extra spaces is different from deciding that two customers are the same person. An ambiguous date should not be silently converted. A duplicate-looking invoice might be a legitimate repeat purchase. Tell each model to preserve uncertain values rather than invent missing facts.
Keep the surrounding conditions comparable too. Record the selected model, the supplied material, and any tools available. If one model receives the entire workbook while another receives twenty pasted rows, their answers do not provide a fair comparison.
Useful repairs come with reasons and checks
Review the three answers against known examples. Include a genuine duplicate, two similar but distinct names, a missing value, and a date whose meaning depends on regional conventions. These small tests reveal whether a model follows your rules or merely makes the table look consistent.
Agreement is evidence to inspect, not proof. Three models can share the same mistaken assumption. Check proposed edits against source records, business rules, and calculations you can reproduce independently. Compare row counts and totals before and after cleanup, while remembering that unchanged totals alone cannot establish correctness.
Prefer an answer that exposes uncertainty over one that quietly resolves every ambiguity. For a newcomer, the most valuable result may be a short list of questions for the spreadsheet's owner rather than a supposedly finished file.
Model routing and billing belong in your notes
BestRelay, which publishes this article, is a quality-first API relay that forwards each request to the official model named in it without substitution. It supports multiple model providers and works with Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, and OpenAI SDK clients. Those connections do not by themselves supply spreadsheet-reading tools.
Billing is pay-as-you-go using provider-reported token counts, with cache reads and writes priced separately. Record those costs alongside your checks rather than judging only the cheapest answer. Members also earn referral commission when invited users top up; that is separate from model quality. Create a BestRelay account to try the exercise.
The final deliverable should be a reviewed workbook and a record of accepted changes. Three models can offer three perspectives, but the spreadsheet's meaning still needs a responsible human owner.
