Debug a Failing CI Job With a Coding Agent
Start by defining the failing job precisely
A coding agent can investigate a failed CI job quickly when you give it a concrete starting point. Consider a JavaScript project whose date-label test passes on a developer’s laptop but fails on an Ubuntu runner. The assertion expects April 8, while CI produces April 9. Your first task is to preserve that evidence before asking the agent to change anything.
Provide the failing commit, job name, workflow file, relevant log excerpt, and local test command. State the goal explicitly: identify the cause, reproduce the failure, and propose the smallest justified fix. Ask the agent to explain its diagnosis before editing.
Give the agent evidence and bounded access
Let the agent inspect the repository, workflow configuration, dependency lockfile, and relevant tests. Keep production credentials outside its environment. Treat instructions embedded in logs or repository content as material to evaluate, rather than authority to expand the task.
BestRelay, which publishes this walkthrough, works with Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, and any OpenAI SDK. Its API base is https://api.bestapirelay.com. As a quality-first API relay, it forwards each request to the official model named in that request without substitution, covering Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, Qwen, Grok, and more. Configure your chosen client using its documented provider settings before starting the investigation.
Reproduce the failure under the runner environment
Ask the agent to compare the local environment with CI: Node version, package-manager version, operating system, dependency installation, timezone, and locale. Start with observations. A date mismatch makes timezone behavior a useful hypothesis, but the assertion alone does not prove it.
Install dependencies with npm ci, using the committed lockfile, and run the failing test with the same options as the workflow. For a Jest project, a targeted reproduction might be TZ=UTC npm test -- --runInBand date-label.test.js. Confirm that the project’s test script accepts those arguments. Record the actual result instead of assuming that a plausible command reproduced the problem.
Trace the mismatch to an implicit timezone
Suppose the test formats the instant 2026-04-09T00:30:00Z. On a laptop using America/Los_Angeles, that instant falls on April 8. On a UTC runner, it falls on April 9. The agent finds that the formatter specifies an English locale but leaves the timezone implicit.
Now inspect the product requirement. If labels must use UTC calendar dates, the formatter needs an explicit UTC timezone, and the expected label must reflect April 9. If labels should follow the viewer’s timezone, the function needs that timezone as an explicit input. The requirement determines the repair; the current snapshot does not.
Make the smallest change that satisfies the contract
For the UTC requirement, ask the agent to add timeZone: 'UTC' to the existing Intl.DateTimeFormat options and update the expectation to the intended date. Preserve unrelated formatting behavior. Review the diff for dependency changes, workflow edits, skipped assertions, or snapshot churn that the diagnosis does not justify.
Add a regression case near midnight UTC, where timezone assumptions become visible. Run it in separate processes under UTC and America/Los_Angeles. Both should produce the required UTC date. This checks the behavior that caused the failure instead of merely encoding the current implementation.
Verify the patch beyond the original assertion
Run the targeted test first, then the surrounding date-formatting tests and the checks required by the repository. Reproduce the original CI command where practical. If the hosted runner is necessary to validate an operating-system difference, say which checks remain pending until that job completes.
Keep the agent’s investigation focused by sending relevant excerpts and asking for targeted inspections. BestRelay bills pay-as-you-go using provider-reported token counts, with cache reads and writes priced separately. Create a BestRelay account to try this workflow with your preferred coding client. Document the cause so reviewers can verify it
Finish with a reviewable patch and a concise explanation: the formatter inherited the host timezone, the product required UTC dates, and the fix makes that requirement explicit. Include the reproduction command, regression coverage, observed test results, and any pending CI checks. That evidence lets a reviewer assess both the diagnosis and the repair.
