A Thin Wrapper Makes AI Calls Predictable
A small boundary keeps AI integration understandable
An AI endpoint accepts a request and returns a model response. Calling it once is usually straightforward. Calling it reliably from several parts of an application introduces repeated decisions: where credentials belong, how long to wait, and how failures reach the user. A thin client wrapper puts those decisions in one small, predictable place.
The wrapper should remain a boundary, not become a second application. Its job is to prepare requests, send them, and return useful results or clear errors. Business rules, conversation storage, and decisions about whether an answer is acceptable usually belong elsewhere.
A clear request contract prevents accidental complexity
Start with the few inputs your application actually needs: a model identifier, messages, an output limit, and perhaps a timeout. Distinguish required inputs from optional settings. Avoid exposing every provider feature immediately, but leave a deliberate way to pass supported options when a real need appears.
Keep model selection explicit. A wrapper should not quietly replace the requested model with a cheaper or faster one. That changes behavior, cost, and expectations. If an application needs fallback routing, make it a separate, visible policy rather than an invisible convenience.
This boundary also clarifies the relay's role. BestRelay, this article's publisher, is a quality-first API relay that forwards each request to the official model named in it, without substitution. Its coverage includes Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, Qwen, Grok, and more. Your wrapper still owns the application's defaults and safeguards.
Connection details belong outside ordinary application logic
Keep credentials and the API base address in deployment settings rather than scattering them through feature code. Never expose a secret API key in browser-delivered code or logs. For a browser application, the trusted boundary will normally be your own server, which holds the credentials and calls the endpoint.
BestRelay works with Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, and any OpenAI SDK. That compatibility can reduce connection work, but it does not make every provider feature identical. Check the request format and endpoint support for the capability you need, especially streaming, tool calls, and provider-specific options.
Timeouts and retries need explicit safety limits
Set a timeout so callers do not wait indefinitely. Support cancellation when practical, particularly for interactive screens. Treat streaming as a distinct response mode: receiving the first text fragment does not mean the request has completed successfully.
Retries deserve more care than a simple repeat button. Some temporary failures and rate limits may justify a bounded retry with increasing delays. Invalid inputs and rejected credentials generally require a fix instead. Follow documented retry guidance, and remember that a connection failure does not prove the provider never processed the request. Repeating it can create another billable operation.
Useful results preserve errors and usage details
Return more than a text string when the application needs accountability. Preserve the selected model, completion status, available usage counts, and request identifiers. Expose meaningful error categories while retaining diagnostic details safely. Redact secrets and avoid logging message content by default; prompts can contain sensitive information.
Usage is especially important for cost tracking. BestRelay bills pay-as-you-go using token counts reported by the provider, with cache reads and writes priced separately. Keep those categories distinct when supplied. Do not treat missing usage as zero or infer an exact bill from text length alone.
A few focused tests protect the boundary
Test successful responses, invalid inputs, timeouts, rate limits, interrupted streams, and missing usage fields. Use controlled test responses for most cases, then add a small integration check against the actual service. Confirm that the requested model remains unchanged and credentials never appear in diagnostic output.
Create a BestRelay account to try this approach. Keep account benefits separate from technical design: members earn a referral commission when people they invite top up, but that should not influence routing or retry decisions. A good wrapper stays small enough to understand and explicit enough to trust.
