A Relay Changes the Address, Not the Work
Codex keeps its familiar role in the workflow
Codex CLI is a coding assistant that reads a project, helps make changes, and responds to requests through a model service. An API relay changes where those requests go. It does not change the basic interaction: you still ask Codex to inspect, explain, or edit code, and Codex still needs a compatible model service to answer.
This distinction makes the setup easier to understand. The command-line tool is the client, the model is the service doing the language work, and the relay is an intermediary that accepts the request and forwards it. The relay is not a replacement coding assistant and does not, by itself, add features to Codex.
A relay sits between the CLI and model
With an OpenAI-compatible relay, Codex sends requests to the relay rather than directly to an API provider. The relay then routes each request according to the model named in it. Compatibility means the service accepts the request format the client expects; it does not mean every provider behaves identically in every detail.
Codex relies on more than a text prompt and reply. Depending on the task, it may need streamed responses, tool use, and structured information about the conversation. Before relying on a relay, check that it supports the API behavior required by your installed Codex version. If a request fails, the cause may be an unsupported API feature or model identifier, not a problem with your project.
Compatibility depends on more than model names
A model name tells the service which model to use, but it cannot guarantee that the whole request will work. Model access, supported API features, and the client’s expectations all matter. It is useful to begin with a small, ordinary task, such as asking Codex to explain a function, before assigning it a large code change.
Keep the model identifier consistent with the name the relay offers. For example, BestRelay currently offers GPT-5.6 Sol. BestRelay describes its routing as forwarding each request to the official model named in that request, without substitution. That makes the requested model a meaningful part of the interaction rather than a label that might silently point somewhere else.
Explicit routing makes model selection easier to reason about
Codex and an OpenAI-compatible relay are one possible combination, not the only one. BestRelay also works with Claude Code, Gemini CLI, and OpenAI SDKs. Its model coverage spans Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, Qwen, Grok, and other families. The same relay can therefore sit behind different tools, though each client still has its own compatibility requirements.
For a newcomer, it helps to change one part of the setup at a time. First confirm that Codex can reach the relay. Then confirm that the selected model is available and that a simple request succeeds. This makes errors easier to isolate than changing the client, model, and project task all at once.
Usage records help make costs less mysterious
Relay billing is another part of the workflow to understand. BestRelay charges pay as you go using token counts reported by the provider. A token is a small unit of text or other model input and output, so longer conversations and larger code context can use more tokens. Cache reads and cache writes are priced separately, which means those usage categories may appear as distinct charges.
Review usage after a few representative tasks to learn what your normal work consumes. A short code question and a request that sends substantial project context can have very different costs. Treating the usage record as part of routine review helps you connect activity with charges instead of guessing from the number of prompts alone.
A small first task is a useful compatibility test
Start with a request that is easy to inspect and safe to undo. Check that Codex receives a response, can use the expected tools, and identifies the model you intended to select. If those basics work, try a modest edit and review the result before moving on to broader changes. This tests the full path from the CLI through the relay without making the first attempt depend on a complex task.
BestRelay also has a referral program: members earn a commission when people they invite top up. Create a BestRelay account to get started.
