A Good Codex Setup Starts With Clear Boundaries

A careful first configuration gives you a clear picture of the account you are using, the project you are sharing, and the actions you are authorizing. For a newcomer, those decisions deserve attention before the first ambitious coding request. Start with a small project and a task whose result you can judge yourself.

The official extension provides a clear starting point

In the VS Code extension marketplace, find the Codex extension published by OpenAI and check the publisher before installing it. Open its panel after installation. The extension brings Codex into the editor, where you can ask about a project and review proposed changes beside the source.

Choose a practice project without customer records or production credentials. Save its current state before continuing, preferably with a version control checkpoint. Give yourself a straightforward way to restore the project if an experiment produces changes you do not want.

Your sign-in choice determines the billing route

Codex supports signing in with ChatGPT or using an API key for local work in the IDE extension. These routes have different billing arrangements: API usage is billed through the API account, while ChatGPT access follows the applicable subscription terms and limits. Decide which account should carry your usage before starting.

When using a relay, check its Codex connection instructions carefully. A provider credential, the service receiving requests, and the requested model must agree. Codex supports custom provider authentication, including credentials supplied through the local environment. Keep secrets out of project files and chat messages.

Provider settings deserve their own careful check

BestRelay, this article’s publisher, is a quality-first API relay that forwards each request to the official model named in it, without substitution. Its coverage includes Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, Qwen, Grok and more. It works with Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and any OpenAI SDK.

For your first connection, follow the relay’s current instructions for the service address, credential and model identifier. Confirm support for the specific Codex workflow you intend to use before committing to a larger task. Keep a brief private note of your choices so you can retrace them during troubleshooting.

Codex’s command-line client and IDE extension share configuration layers, including model, provider and permission settings. Review existing settings if you have previously experimented with the command-line client, since those choices may also affect your editor session.

Small permissions make the first task easier to judge

Review the available permission controls before allowing edits or execution. Start with restricted access and retain approval prompts for actions you want to inspect. Read each request in relation to your task: identify the action, the affected files and the expected result before approving it.

Ask Codex to explain one short function first. Request a description of its inputs, output and likely failure cases. The extension can use open files and selected code as context, so select the relevant passage and make your question specific. Check the explanation against the actual source.

Then request one modest change, such as clearer wording in an error message. State the desired outcome and ask for a focused edit. Inspect the changed lines, check for unrelated modifications and run the relevant project check before accepting the result.

Usage review belongs in your first session

Give your first experiment a small spending allowance. BestRelay bills on a pay-as-you-go basis using token counts reported by the provider, with cache reads and writes priced separately. Review those categories when checking usage, and examine repeated attempts before increasing your allowance.

Create a BestRelay account when you are ready to try a small API session. Members also earn a referral commission when people they invite top up; treat that as a separate account benefit when assessing your own development costs.

Finish the session by checking that you can identify the active account, explain the permission choices, review the edits and locate the usage record. Keep those habits as you move toward larger tasks.
